Tasted: Canadian Riesling

By / Wine + Drinks / October 9th, 2014 / 1

Riesling is a classic choice to serve alongside your holiday turkey, with good reason. Its high acidity and low alcohol content balance the richness of a traditional meal.  And, as an added bonus, some Rieslings demonstrate a touch of sweetness that pairs well with sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, cranberry and all that is glazed.

Try one of these home grown wines and celebrate our Canadian Thanksgiving traditions. Cheers!

Review Summary:
An intense bouquet of lime, peach, minerals and flowers is followed by fresh acid on the palate and flavours of grapefruit and lime. This wine is bright, with just a hint of sweetness and is medium in length.

Review Summary:
You can always count on Fielding to make a solid Riesling, regardless of the vintage. Here you will find a ripe personality of peach, honey, flowers, tutti frutti and a touch of honey. Good weight, balance and acidity round out the mix.

Review Summary:
The regular Riesling from GreenLane won gold at Cuvée, and as impressive as it is, my money is on their OV bottling, made from 22-year-old vines. Dry, there is mineral, lime, bergamot and apples layered on zesty acidity. Kudos to this small winery in Beamsville for the quality they are churning out.

Gaspereau Vineyards Riesling (Brut) 2009

Review Summary:
Delicate floral and lemon-citrus aromatics reveal Riesling pedigree. Expands broadly on the palate, showing classic lemon-lime intensity backed by mineral grip and brisk acidity. Adroitly balanced with a touch of residual sweetness, lightly creamy texture and lingering floral sensation on the finish.
