#FridayCocktail – Mai Tai
My youngest son was born on the last day of August, five years ago tomorrow. Fortunately, for friends and family, his birthday celebration, inevitably, is also our end of summer bash. This year he has chosen a pirate theme which, in turn, has inspired me to chose a tiki-themed cocktail for the adult crowd to enjoy. And, what’s more tiki than the Mai Tai?
“Maita’i” is the Tahitian word for “good” but, surprisingly, the cocktail was said to be invented in California. There are countless Mai Tai recipes but the basic formula calls for some combination of rums, a citrus element and pineapple. Oh…and a little paper umbrella! Here is what I’ll be serving this weekend; enjoy.
Ingredients
1 1/2 ounces of dark rum
1/2 ounce of coconut rum
1/2 ounce of orange curaçao
1/4 ounce of simple syrup
1/4 ounce of grenadine
3 ounces of pineapple juice
juice from 1/2 lime
Pineapple wedge, for garnish
Ice
Paper umbrella
Preparation
Add rums, curaçao, simple syrup, pinapple juice and freshly squeezed lime to a cocktail shaker, 1/2 filled with ice.
Shake vigorously.
Fill a highball or hurricane glass with ice.
Add grenadine to the glass.
Pour drink from cocktail shaker into glass – do not stir.
Garnish with pineapple wedge and umbrella.
