#FridayCocktail – Goodbye Dog Days

By / Wine + Drinks / August 15th, 2014 / 2

Mid-August and a chill is already in the air. Hopefully, Mother Nature will grace us with a few more warm, sultry summer days but the dog days are probably already behind us – sigh. So, what do we drink when the mercury falls a little below summer temperatures? Let’s try a cool weather twist on a summer favourite.

Apple Cider Sangria

Makes a pitcher, about 5-6 servings

Ingredients

Spiced Apple Cider:
2 cups apple cider
2 cinnamon sticks
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon orange zest
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
2 orange slices (rounds)

Sangria:
1 bottle  Spanish red wine
2 cups spiced apple cider (see preparation below)
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup brandy
Ice

Preparation

First, prepare your spiced apple cider by mixing above ingredients (Spiced Apple Cider) in a saucepan.

Bring to a simmer, remove from heat and cool completely.

Strain your mixture.

Add spiced apple cider to a pitcher 1/2 filled with ice.

Add red wine, orange juice and brandy.

Stir.

Garnish with orange rounds and cinnamon sticks.
