Finding the Right #WineApp for Your Palate

By / Wine + Drinks / July 23rd, 2013 / 2

Finding a wine app that’s right for you can be as difficult as finding a wine that you love. The market is flooded with both Android and iOS compatible apps, all promising to make our wine drinking lives easier. Before investing any time – and perhaps a bit of cash – ask yourself a few questions to help determine what it is you want and need in a wine application. Are you looking to match food and wine? Track your purchases or personal reviews? Receive recommendations? Read reviews? Find a wine in your local liquor store? Once you have narrowed down your personal requirements, the choice should be less arduous. Here’s a few of our favourites:

Selecting a wine for Dummies

FREE

A great starting point for the wine novice. Features include food and wine pairing and an option to snap a pic of your wines’ label and make your own notes for later reference. The best part, in our opinion; the pronunciation guide! Any one up for a glass of cab er nay saw vee nyon??

VinGo

$1.99

A great app, if you reside in British Columbia, Ontario or Quebec. Its basic function is to track wines you have already tasted and to find a wine at your closest BCLDB, LCBO or SAQ. Wines can be scanned in by bar code or found by name or SKU number. The app usually includes tasting notes on entered wines and you can add your own notes as well.

Cor.kz

$1.99

This app is receiving some serious buzz in the wine world, mostly because it pulls from CellarTracker’s 1.5 million bottle inventory and claims to have over 3 million logged reviews.  If you are already using CellarTracker, you can update immediately via cor.kz. Other great features include the side-by-side comparison tool and the reference section.

The Decanter World Wine Awards

$1.99

The ideal app for the oenophile looking for reviews of medal-winning wines. Users can search by price, region or style and receive recommendations from the world’s foremost wine-experts.

Wine Events

FREE

Developed by LocalWineEvents.com, this app finds local food and wine events, can focus in on weekend events only, can help you plan travel to other cities and sometimes offers good deals and discounts. It has a fairly good database of events in most major US and Canadian cities, with some international events popping up as well. Hint – if you’re living just outside a major city, opt to manually input that city’s name or the geolocation function will turn up 0 Events in your area.

We would love to hear your opinion – do you have your own recommendation?
