Well, summer is over. Ok, ok, it’s been over for a while. But, like many, I’ve been holding on, tooth and nail, hoping that maybe, just maybe, this year, winter won’t come around. Of course, there are people out there who love the cold weather – crazy, right? Me, I’d rather be inside, snuggled under several blankets with a nice glass of wine and a good book or great company.

There are a few tricks to finding the perfect cozy-making wine:

1. Avoid rosés, light bodied reds (like Beaujolais and Pinot Noirs) and acidic whites. If a wine’s tasting note reads “refreshing, light, great acidity” or any such thing, put it down and keep looking.
2. Oak is your friend. Oak makes everything richer, deeper and well, cozier. If your wine doesn’t have oak, that’s ok. Aim for richer, creamier whites and fuller, richer reds.
3. Texture, structure and layers give your wine depth and add warmth to the glass. If you’re not sure if a wine is textured or layered, look for savoury qualities similar to what you’d find in long-braised meats or stews.
