Holiday Mocktail

For many of us, the best part of the holiday season is spending time with friends and family. It can be fun to let loose and have a few drinks, but you don’t need alcohol to enjoy yourself. There are plenty of reasons why you might not be drinking this winter. No matter why you’re avoiding alcohol, these five non-alcoholic drinks can make delicious alternatives to traditional cocktails.

Non-Alcoholic Eggnog

Eggnog is always a favourite around the holiday season. If you want to enjoy it sans alcohol, skip the rum and brandy. You can buy non-alcoholic eggnog at most grocery stores, but it’s more fun to make it yourself. Here’s a recipe you make at home that uses less sugar and cream than many store-bought varieties.

Ingredients: Milk (or non-dairy milk), egg whites, honey, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon

Cranberry Apple Cider Punch

If you’re hosting a party this holiday season, this fizzy cranberry apple cider makes a great addition to your table. This recipe calls for ½ cup of sugar, but you can adjust the amount depending on how tart you like it. You can also replace the ice with frozen cranberries to make it more visually appealing.

Ingredients: Fresh cranberries, water, sugar, apple cider, ginger ale, lemon juice, cranberry juice

Virgin Mojito

It’s hard to beat the fresh minty taste of mojitos. Even though they’re normally served with rum, you can substitute Sprite to make a non-alcoholic version. Here’s a simple recipe to serve up at your next holiday party.

Ingredients: Mint leaves, fresh lime, Sprite, club soda, ice

Fruity Non-Alcoholic Mulled Wine

If you think you can’t enjoy mulled wine without the wine think again. This fantastic recipe uses pomegranate juice and a strong mixture of spices to satisfy your taste buds. Don’t be surprised if your mouth starts watering as soon as your saucepan begins to boil.

Ingredients: Pomegranate juice, golden caster sugar, frozen blackberries, apple juice, cinnamon, star anise, cloves, black peppercorns, oranges

Piña Colada Mocktail

If you’re picturing more of a tropical holiday, a piña colada might be exactly the drink you’re craving. This recipe avoids the rum but can still spice up your winter. It relies on a mixture of cloves, cinnamon, pineapple, and sugar to make a rum syrup.

Ingredients: Pineapple Juice, coconut milk, lime juice, ice, cherry, muscovado sugar, fresh pineapple, black peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon stick
