According to Beer Canada, the number of breweries in Canada is on the rise, and with more breweries comes more products on the market. Many brewers are sick of producing the same-ol’ same-ol’ when it comes to seasonal beers, so they are getting creative.

Here are 10 beers to sip on during the brisk fall months, and the freezing winter ones, too.

Autumn

Organic Sweet Potato Rye Ale

London Brewing, Ontario

You’ve heard of sweet potato fries and sweet potato pie, but what about sweet potato beer? London Brewing, a London Ontario-based brewing company and tap house, is currently showcasing a sweet potato rye ale. It’s smooth and dark with hints of cinnamon and ginger, making this beer perfect for the crisp fall months.

The Bite: Apple Cider

Serpent Brewing, Nova Scotia

Serpent Brewing, a Belgium-inspired brewing company based in Spryfield, Nova Scotia, is offering a seasonal beer called The Bite: Apple Cider. It features three different types of apples from Annapolis Valley and combines two yeasts, one from Belgium. The result is a slightly dry yet rustic flavour suitable for a range of palates.

Pumpkin Ale

Lake of Bays Brewing Co., Ontario

Lake of Bays Brewing, an Ontario-based brewing company, is offering up their take on a traditional pumpkin beer. Their pumpkin ale is made from all natural ingredients, including vanilla, hops, yeast and fresh Lake of Bays water. It’s best paired with root vegetables and desserts featuring cream and cinnamon, making it a perfect autumn beverage.

Night Märzen

Beau’s Brewing Co., Ontario

Beau’s Brewing Co. based in Vankleek, Ontario has been around since 2006 and this year their lineup includes a seasonal amber lager. Night Märzen features the sweetness of toasted malt complemented by European hops. It pairs well with anything toasted or grilled, making it an excellent choice for a chilly late-night bonfire.

Pumpkineater Pumpkin Ale

Howe Sound Brewing, British Columbia

Howe Sound Brewing, a craft-style brewery based out of Squamish, BC, put their spin on a seasonal pumpkin beer with their Pumpkineater Pumpkin Ale. It’s an imperial pumpkin ale brewed with classically autumn ingredients including nutmeg and cloves. It also has cinnamon and ginger, giving it a fragrant-yet-familiar seasonal scent.

Winter Beard

Muskoka Brewery, Ontario

Muskoka Brewery, founded in 1996 and based in Muskoka, Ontario, prides themselves on creating unique alcoholic beverages and using creative ingredients. Their seasonal winter beer Winter Beard is no different. It’s a double chocolate cranberry stout with a rich and full-bodied flavour. This beer has dominant chocolate flavour mixed with notes of cranberry and coffee and pairs well with cheesecakes, berries and chocolate, making it a great addition to a holiday charcuterie party.

Dark Lager

Camp Beer Co., British Columbia

Grassroots brewing company Camp Beer Co. and tasting room based in Langley, BC may not offer a fancy pumpkin or potato seasonal beer, but they do offer a dark lager right now. It mixes dark malt notes with the crisp lightness of a European lager, making it the perfect beer to enjoy with friends on a cold night sitting around a warm fire.

Nightwatch Coffee Lager

Lighthouse Brewing Company and tasting room in Victoria, BC has the ideal coffee lager for a snowy night. Although it’s not particularly seasonal, Lighthouse’s Nightwatch coffee lager features flavours complementary to the winter season. It’s produced with cold brew coffee and has subtle notes of cinnamon, hazelnut and chocolate.

Sasquatch Stout

Independent craft brewery, Old Yale Brewing based out of Chilliwack, BC, currently crafts a dark stout beer called Sasquatch Stout. Sasquatch Stout is a smooth dark lager with notes of chocolate, espresso and dark roasted malts. It pairs well with smoked brisket, french onion soup and even tiramisu, making it the ideal lager for a winter dinner party.

Raspberry Porter

Tree Brewing Co., British Columbia

Nothing quite warms you up on a cold day like a steaming hot cup of coffee. But what about a coffee lager? Since 1996, Tree Brewing has been turning the normal craft beer flavours on their head. Their raspberry chocolate lager called Raspberry Porter does just that. It combines light chocolate and toffee undertones with a raspberry finish coming together as an easy drinking dark beer.
