Lee White Necklace by Tuli

By / Life / February 20th, 2017 / 5

Paper beads on a large, gold-coloured chain – that’s the essence of this simple, sophisticated necklace.

But it’s so much more than that.

The Lee White necklace comes from Tuli, a company dedicated to ending poverty by using the fashion industry to empower resourceful, hard-working women in Uganda. All of their products are hand-made by Ugandan artists.

When you first hear “paper beads”, you may think flimsy beads that won’t last a day in the rain. However, these beads are very durable – made from recycled paper found in Kampala (magazines, old advertisements, etc.), the paper is rolled up tightly to form a bead, covered in varnish and hand painted. After they’ve dried, they are as smooth and firm as any other bead on the market.

I’ve worn the Lee White out several times. It’s comfortable, smooth on the skin and a great conversation piece. When you purchase the Lee White or any other jewelry from Tuli, you provide enough money for 10 nutritious meals and help create a steady, livable income for the artist.

Tuli is fighting poverty, one paper bead at a time.
