Campo de Borja is a little-known region south of Rioja that specializes in Garnacha. With this wine I thought I was sampling a Châteauneuf-du-Pape at under $20. The wine had the dense, dark purple-black colour of the southern Rhône, a spicy, herbal, blackberry nose, and it was full and savoury on the palate.
Clean scents of apple, lemon and toasty almond alert the nose. The lively mousse, firm structure, crisp fruit flavours and dry finish ensure a refreshing quaff. This spectacular value and goes-down-easy style make it a perfect reception sparkler, whether for large gatherings or to greet friends at home.
Not sure if there is a better wine at this price available anywhere. Such an incredible deal. Thick and rich currants, blackberry, mature plums and lovely vanilla spice on the nose. The palate reveals ripe dark fruits, liquorice-anise notes, spices and vibrant acidity for balance. Just a good, honest red wine to serve with grilled steak or roasted lamb.
Sourced from old vines, this 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) grabs your attention with its complexity and balance. The nose opens boldly with fig, prune and chocolate aromas. The palate features a rich fruity core, wrapped in satisfying savouriness that unfolds onto a long finish. Calls out for game dishes.
Medium-deep orange/amber. Outspoken nose of orange marmalade, nuts and old wood. In the mouth this is bone-dry and tastes surprisingly fresh with Sultana raisins, hazelnuts and herbal overtones. Serve with olives, any olives. Great value.
Full ruby. Spicy nose with black cherry and dark chocolate notes. Of medium body, the powerful middle palate feels slightly warm. There is enough fruit and oak flavour but the finish is a bit rough due to dry tannins. Better drink it with red meat or rich cheeses within a year or so.
Very clean and fresh with crisp grapefruit and green fruit character supported by refreshing acidity and dry minerality. A good aperitif, equally suitable with shellfish and seafood salads.
