La Chaine des Rôtisseurs Holds National Young Cooks Competition

Are you an aspiring chef? On October 23, 2009, up-and-coming young chefs from across Canada will meet in a full day competition in British Columbia at Victoria’s Camosun College. The winner will have the honour of representing Canada at the 33rd Concours International des Jeunes Commis Rôtisseurs Competition to be held in Helsinki, Finland on September 16, 2010.

Some of Canada’s finest young chefs, chosen through regional selection competitions held in their respective local cities, are given four hours in which to compose a menu based on an identical, previously unidentified “market basket” containing certain basic ingredients. Using all of these ingredients, as well as drawing on a variety of staples from a pantry, each contestant must prepare a three-course meal (appetizer, main course and dessert) for four people. A panel of professional and non-professional judges awards marks for taste, presentation, originality and kitchen technique.

First organized by La Chaine des Rôtisseurs in Switzerland in 1977, competitions are open to young cooks under the age of 27 and are now held at regional, national and international levels in countries around the world.

The purpose of the competition is to encourage and promote the culinary expertise of young Commis Rôtisseurs by exposing them to a competitive environment with their peers and showcasing their talents and creativity in a national arena.

The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is an international gastronomic society devoted to promoting fine dining and preserving the camaraderie and pleasures of the table. The society has both non-professional “gastronome” and culinary professional members in more than 75 countries around the world.
