The Wedding Gift

By / Food / August 29th, 2013 / 1

How do you decide what to gift a couple on their wedding day?

It really depends on the couple. Are they just starting out in their life together? Do they already share a home? Is this a second marriage or a blended family to be?

Just starting out

If the couple has taken the time to create a gift registry, purchase a gift from their list. If not, think of essential home items you couldn’t live without – chances are they will feel the same way. Be sure to include a gift receipt.

Sharing a home

In this case, go for a luxury item that the couple is not likely to already have. Monogrammed sheets, towels and bathrobes are good choices; choose a white or neutral colour palate. Another good idea – especially for wine lovers – is an anniversary wine. Pick a vintage that will be at its peak at the couple’s fifth or tenth wedding anniversary.

The soon-to-be blended family

If you know a great photographer or photography studio, book a session for the new family. Other than their wedding pictures, this will probably be the first time they will sit for a photo as a family unit. We guarantee it will be a much cherished gift for years to come.

Try and avoid gifts that rely heavily on personal style unless you are familiar with the couple’s home and design sense. It is also useful to know the cultural traditions of the happy couple; although you may be racking your brain for a unique gift idea, a cash gift may be their norm. Try and feel out close friends or family of the soon to be newlyweds.

And, remember, any gift given from the heart, be it large or small, will be appreciated.
