Sodastream Fountain Jet Home Soda Maker

What is it? What does it do?

The Sodastream system is a home carbonation unit. It converts regular tap water to carbonated water and with the addition of flavoured syrups, can transform that carbonated water to your soda of choice. In recent days, the Israel based company has secured actress Scarlett Johansson as their spokesperson with a Super Bowl commercial in their very near future.

Pros

Waste reduction – The system comes equipped with its own reusable bottles. If your household is big on soda or carbonated water, you will significantly reduce the amount of cans and bottles you purchase.

Advocates the use of tap water – Remember when we were kids? We drank out of the garden hose and filled our cups from the kitchen and bathroom faucets. We still can.

Health benefits – No high fructose corn syrup or aspartame are used in the Sodastream concentrates. Low-sodium and no sodium options are also available. An even better option; add some natural flavours to the carbonated water for a purely healthy hydration choice.

Personalization – Adjust to your own preferred level of carbonation and flavouring.

Cons

Inconvenience – Having the CO2 canister refilled/exchanged is not always convenient but as the system becomes more popular, purchasing options will open up. Same goes for the syrups/concentrates.

No significant $avings – At this point in time, there is not a real money saving incentive vs. purchasing sodas and carbonated sodas at the grocery store.

Counter space – If you live in a smaller space, the unit will need to be stored or take up some valuable space on your countertop.

Will the concept take off? Maybe. Many years ago, while having dinner with a French colleague, I was told of a single-cup coffee brewing system that was taking Europe by storm. My thoughts; that’s never going to happen here….
