Red Wine For Health
I was listening to Ontario Today, a program on CBC radio, recently where the guest (Konrad Ejbich) was discussing resveratrol, the component in red wine said to guard against heart disease. Not being a doctor, Konrad kept his musings on the subject matter short. Yet, one of his comments did strike a chord with me. Studies reveal that for resveratrol to work, it must be consumed with other types of nutrients. In other words, don’t expect it to protect you from heart disease if you take it in pill form. Our bodies can only absorb it properly, and in small amounts, when it’s present alongside other natural components, say in a glass of red wine.
The point, of course, is that maintaining good health should be enjoyable. Taking a pill is not in the least bit fun. If you’re at all concerned about such things, have a small glass of red wine most evenings to get the full benefit.
Here are a couple I’ve had recently that I will make you feel happy, if not healthy.
2007 Terra D’Aligi Tatone Montepulciano D’Abruzzo ($15.95)
Dark and inky in the glass, it’s bouquet is brimming with cherries, spice and coffee bean. It’s somewhat still tannic in the mouth, but finishes with pleasant sour cherries and dark fruits. (The tannins seem to settle a bit after being opened for about an hour).
2009 Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Red Label Zinfandel ($21.95)
This is one of our go-to wines — always on hand, always good for almost any kind of food. It has a lovely bouquet of lush summer berries and a peppery background. Those aromas are echoed on the tongue along with a tasty dark chocolate undertone. Very nice.
