Outdoor Patio Furniture – What to Buy?

By / Food / August 1st, 2013 / 1

As summer winds on, finding a good deal on new patio furniture is more likely. With some retailers slashing prices, sometimes up to 75%, the dog days of summer are the ideal time to invest in some new outdoor pieces. What you choose to buy will depend on budget, use and the climate you reside in.

Wrought Iron

Classic and elegant in any setting, wrought iron can be left outside year round, provided it is cared for. Although cumbersome to move, the weight of the iron is a definite bonus in windy conditions. Modern pieces are powder coated requiring little maintenance and a coat of paint can change up the look of your deck instantly. Expensive.

Tubular Aluminium

An economical and aesthetically pleasing choice, especially for an outdoor dining table and chairs. Available in a multitude of finishes and designs – from classic to contemporary – the powder coated finish on most pieces provide good weather resistance. Can be cleaned easily with soap and water.

Wood

Wood pieces can instantly add warmth to any space. The best choices for a harsh Canadian climate are natural hardwoods or treated wood. Teak, although pricey, can last up to 50 years if stored or covered in the winter and oiled regularly. The best feature of wood furniture? It does not retain heat so it can be an ideal choice for that sunny spot on your patio.

Synthetic Wicker

A popular choice for outdoor lounge furniture, synthetic wicker pieces are more weather resistant than their wood counterparts and easier to clean and maintain. Synthetic materials are also UV resistant, lightweight and some sets come with a 20 year warranty. Look for a tight weave; it usually indicates better quality.

HDPE (100% recycled plastic)

High density polyethylene patio furniture is finding its place in the market. Lightweight, corrosion resistant (salt water) and UV resistant, HDPE pieces are a great choice for your pool deck. Best if stored indoors or in a garden shed for the winter months.

Our fav outdoor furniture pick; the Classic Adirondack Collection from Costco. Made from the highest-quality HDPE, these beautiful pieces – available in a rainbow of colours – will add country charm to any outdoor space. And, they come with a 40 year warranty!
