Your Guests’ Home Away from Home

The festive season is here and we all know what that means – guests and visitors. The perfect guest room is always a challenge. Here are a few tips to make it a home away from home for visitors.

COLOUR

Neutral beiges, pale yellows, light blues – lighter colours make a space feel larger. Use dark colours as accents with your linens, area rug, throw pillows and artwork.

DECOR

Keep the decor gender neutral. Avoid floral patterns or frilly decoration in favour of the sleek edges of modern decor or the rugged, weathered antique look.

BED

A king sized bed will make a small room crowded. Aim for a double or queen and invest in comfort instead of size. This will give your guests room to open up their suitcases without having to perch on the bed.

DRESSER

Toss the dresser. Instead, try a slim, antique dressing table with a push in chair. It won’t take up as much space as a dresser and will still provide a surface for your guests’ toiletries and cosmetics.

Optional: mount a mirror on the wall behind the dressing table.

CLOSET

Ensure there are hooks on the bedroom door for those pieces that need hanging and convert your closet into a reading nook. Remove the door and install a bench with storage underneath.

BEDSIDE TABLES

These are a must for electronic devices, chargers, wallets, glasses and all of the other little knick knacks. Keep clear of everything except a lamp and a box of tissues.

LIGHTING

Lamps are most definitely needed. One on each side of the bed is ideal, but just one lamp would be sufficient.

Optional: wall mounted lighting over the dressing table.
