Château Frontenac Fortress Designation

Pretty much everyone recognizes Château Frontenac. This national historic site is one of Canada’s great railway hotels. It’s among the most-photographed hotels in the world (if not, THE most photographed) because of its prominence in the Quebec City skyline. Now, it is recognized as an iconic Louis XIII Fortress destination.

This prestigious designation comes in honour of the château’s 125th Anniversary. Château Frontenac has always been a hotel for royalty. Queen Elizabeth II stayed there when she visited, as did her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. As well as famous faces. Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie, among others, have stayed there at one time or another. Its impressive French-Canadian castle architecture and design fills every guest with a sense of luxury that spans the ages.

“It goes without question that the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac was destined to be a LOUIS XIII Fortress,” explains Olivia Tran, Brand Director of Louis XIII Canada. “Our relationship with the luxury collection of Fairmont hotels dates back some time now. The hotel is a national icon which plays a pivotal importance to the history of the city, province, and country. The hotel has been a guardian of LOUIS XIII’s heritage, legacy, craftsmanship and dedication to excellence with their patrons, long before being named a Fortress. It was without a doubt a natural next step in our relationship.”

The Fortress Designation is very much like the Michelin star ranking, only for hotels. Louis XIII Cognac is one of the worlds most prestigious liquor brands, recognized best by their distinctive (and handmade) bottles. The legendary decanters have been handmade from fine crystal for generations, mouth-blown by some of the most skilled master craftsmen.

“What makes LOUIS XIII so special and cherished is each decanter of LOUIS XIII is the life achievement of generations of cellar masters,” Tran says. “No better words could be used to describe LOUIS XIII than the fragrance of time in a bottle.”

As a Louis XIII Fortress, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is a guardian of the Louis XIII heritage. “Rich with history and legacy, LOUIS XIII is an experience that travels far beyond the cognac,” explains Tran. “Since its origins in 1874, each generation of cellar master selects from our cellars the oldest and most precious eaux-de-vie for LOUIS XIII – for the future. The key is to ensure your brand and product carry tradition, while adapting to a modern world, all while not compromising your integrity.”

Fairmont Le Château Frontenac already serves Louis XIII Cognac; as a Fortress, it now houses two magnum (1.5L) crystal decanters and displays a Jeroboam (3L) bottle at the entrance to the Champlain Restaurant.

It’s worth a trip to Quebec City to take a tour of the newest Louis XIII Fortress. (They even have guided tours).
