Bookshelves for the Imagination

By / Food / December 10th, 2013 / 2

I recently discovered Pinterest for myself, much to the detriment of my productivity. As I’ve mentioned before, I have quite the library… and it’s going to get bigger. Finding unique ways to display my collection is top priority, and Pinterest has a wealth of ideas just waiting to me discover them. Here are a few of my favourite:

Under the Stairs

The odd angles and lowering ceiling under the stairs make it cumbersome to furnish. Try installing a bookcase. Paint the unit the same colour as the walls to make it seem as if the books are pushed into the wall itself.

Floor to Ceiling

Dramatic, impressive and versatile, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves work in the living room, dining room and office. In small rooms, paint it the same colour as the walls – this makes it less obvious and therefore less ominous. In large rooms, it is the focal point – use dark wood like mahogany and walnut or use a bright colour to pull the eye. The added bonus is that it can also hold your TV or you can have drawers for your good cutlery. Just make sure there’s enough room for everything.

Themed

This may be a surprise to some of you, but I’m a Doctor Who fan. Somewhere, there is a bookshelf that looks like the Tardis. This quirky furnishing excites other fans when they see it and is a huge (literally) conversation piece for people who have no clue why I’d want a bookshelf shaped like a big blue phone box. But geeky sci-fi shows aren’t the only themes. Get bookshelves shaped like trees and create your own learning forest. Or convert an out-of-use canoe by slicing it in half and installing some shelves.

Get Creative

Almost anything sturdy and large enough can be converted into a bookshelf. Find some inspiration on Pinterest (that’s where I found most of mine!) – just search “bookshelves” and see where it takes you.
