Imagine you’re standing in front of the double wood doors of a massive villa. Those doors seem to reach at least two meters above your head. The faded colour of the wood almost blends into the yellow stucco walls. As large and ancient as they are, they open easily. Before you step over the threshold you look back over your shoulder. You, and the villa, are totally surrounded by hectares of lush vineyards extending as far as the eye can see. You’re in Italy visiting Tommasi Viticoltori, and you’re having the time of your life.

Tommasi, located in Pedemonte Village in Verona recently celebrated its 110th anniversary. Founded on a small section of land in 1902 by Giacomo Battista Tommasi, it now encompasses 135 hectares made up of four different vineyards: Tommasi, Il Sestante, Poggio al Tufo, Doganella and Filodora Prosecco. Most impressively, Tommasi is still family run. As is tradition, this 4th generation looks for ways of modernizing and expanding the winery while maintaining that fundamental connection to the past – that is, producing some of the best wine of the region.

Tommasi is best known for its reds: Amarone Classico, Valpolicella Classico Superiore, and Recioto della Valpolicella. Its whites, however, are equally delicious. Keep an eye out for Bianco di Custoza, Lugana and Maremma Toscana. While you’re at it, pick up their Prosecco, too. It will make your day.

Giacomo created Tommasi Viticoltori during the years of the Belle Époque (1871 to 1914). It was an era defined by unprecedented optimism, peace and innovation. Those ideals, embodied by Giacomo himself, still run in the blood of his descendants. Always looking for ways to grow, the family continues to purchase more land, improve grape production and, necessarily, expand their cellar. Travelling to the area? Tommasi now owns hotel and spa, Villa Quaranta and the historic restaurant, Bottega del Vino.
