Trailer Park Beer: a taste of Freedom 35 #BrewedAwakening

By / Wine + Drinks / August 26th, 2017 / 15

As a born and raised Maritimer, I am all too familiar with The Trailer Park Boys, even though I’m not familiar at all with actual trailer parks. In honesty, though, I haven’t seen a show since their Christmas special over 10 years ago, but their presence is felt in the region. In fact, Bubbles bought my brother’s house. That’s the degrees of separation down east.

Anyway, I finally got around to trying their beer: Freedom 35 Lager, made for them by Double Trouble in Guelph, who are very qualified contract brewers. If you’ve seen the show, or just imagine the drinking habits of stereotypical trailer trash, you know that they wouldn’t pay premium for beer. They’d either drink the cheapest, swilliest, not too flavourful beer around, or the one with the most alcohol for the buck. So I’m not sure it makes sense to have a microbrewery brew their beer, and for it to actually have no corn in the recipe, and to have noticeable hop bitterness.

TASTING NOTE

Freedom 35 is 5% alcohol, and I’d guess around 15-20 IBU of bitterness. Perhaps a bit higher. It has a bit more flavour than a typical Canadian lager like…um……Canadian, but it can’t compete with a good European style lager. So, yes, it might be better than Keith’s, but I don’t expect the sales from this will get them their freedom 35. They should stick to dope.
