Tasted: Belgian Brews

By / Wine + Drinks / October 17th, 2013 / 2

Quick association game: what comes to mind when I say ‘Belgium’? Beer, right? Why not. Belgian brewmasters are … well … masters at making great beer. The best way to enjoy that beer is by plunking yourself down on a chair on a sunny patio in Belgium. Can’t do that? Hmm, no problem. Stop into your nearest liquor purveyor and pick up some of the following Belgian brews. We’ve recorded our impressions. Let us know yours.

Tripel Karmeliet Blond 3-Grain Bottle-fermented Strong Beer 8%

Brewed in the traditional style of the Carmelite nuns, which goes back to the 17th century, this one displays a very persistent, creamy soft head with light yeasty malt aromas. Smooth, fruity and lightly sweet in the mouth, it is perilously easy to drink. Finishes with light, nutty bitterness. The high alcohol is barely noticeable until you attempt to stand up.

Saison Dupont, Brasserie Dupont 6.5%

Undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle (bottle-conditioned) so expect a hazy appearance. Head is foamy and persistent with soft, slightly yeasty and citrusy aromas. Generously full flavours reveal fruity and nutty character with an initial touch of sweetness, finishing with appetizingly dry bitterness.
