Summertime Wine Finds

By / Wine + Drinks / September 17th, 2014 / 1

I think The Cars put it best when the sang: “Summer, summer, summer summer … turns me upside down”.

While we are most definitely no longer in summer (calendar-wise yes, weather-wise no – just ask Calgary), the summertime period did cause me some upside down moments, especially when I decided to clean out my office: Oh the things I found.

Some of those things included forgotten wine reviews, of some pretty good wines, so now it is time to share:

Two Oceans 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, South Africa ($10.95)

Yes there are the typical grassy and grapefruit notes, but there is also some orange and cantaloupe elements that sneak their way in with a slightly bitter pith-like nuance to the finish.

The Dreaming Tree 2010 Crush, California ($16.95)

With Dave Matthews (yes the singer) as the “co-creator” of this wine you’d expect laid back and mellow, but there is some nice complexity starting with the deep black cherry, plum, strawberry and cinnamon … it’s easy drinking but it’s so much more than your typical celebrity wine.

Pepperwood Grove 2011 Old Vine Zinfandel, California ($13.95)

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this sweet plum, cherry cola, vanilla wood, dried raspberry and fig number, all back by a touch of spice to keep it honest.
