Real men drink pink

By / Wine + Drinks / November 2nd, 2015 / 2

According to recent research from the Provence Wine Council, more men in the US, Russia, Brazil and Australia are drinking (and enjoying) rosé wine. The media has dubbed the trend as the brosé phenomenon.

Although young women are still the largest consumers of rosé wine, men are catching up. In fact, according to the above research, men in Brazil drink more pink than their female counterparts.

Rosé consumption, world-wide, has increased by 20% since 2002 and in the UK sales have risen by 250%. In Sweden, 750%. Staggering, really.

If you haven’t already jumped on the pink bandwagon, here are a few our suggestions to get you started. If you already think in pink, why not add one of these wines to your repertoire of favourites.

Cheers!

CANADA

Fort Berens Pinot Noir Rosé 2014, Lillooet ($15.99)
BC’s new hinterland region continues to surprise with this food-friendly, dry rosé that sports strawberry and raspberry notes kept well in check with crisp acidity and a touch of earthiness before a clean, dry close. Ideal for lighter seafood dishes such as shellfish marinara or with picnic cold cuts.

FRANCE

Réserve de Sours Brut Sparkling Rosé NV, Bordeaux ($19)
Made by the Methode Traditionelle to a slightly sweet finish, this bottle was mostly from the 2011 harvest, although not strictly a vintage wine. Medium-deep vermilion colour, with a medium-strong mousse. Nose of strawberry, with aspects of roses, peach, and a hint of rosemary. Likeable tastes of tangerine and strawberry with good acidity. Drink up.

Domaine Mur-Mur-Ium Le Retour Rosé 2013, Côtes du Ventoux ($20)
Fresh and deliciously quaffable with watermelon, strawberry, rose water and savoury notes and fresh acidity. Nothing complicated, but easy, well made and a good value.

ITALY

Ca’ di Frara Oltre il Classico Cruasé Oltrepò Pavese DOCG Pinot Noir Brut NV, Lombardy ($25)
Cruasé is a bubbly made in the traditional method in Oltrepò Pavese. Made in a rosé style, so the skin contact gives it an orange-rose colour. Sports red berry-fruit aromas and flavours, with refreshing verve on the dry palate. Finishes with a bite of red apple skin. Enjoy with charcuterie.
