On May 31, 2017, winemakers from across Ontario met at Niagara College to find out who would take home the crown as the province’s most dynamic and distinctive wine.

The 2017 Ontario Wine Awards (OWA) was the 23rd installment of the event founded by Tony Aspler, one of Canada’s most acclaimed wine writers (a familiar name in the pages of Quench), and Order of Canada Recipient. His goal was to catapult Ontario VQA wines onto domestic and foreign markets by recognizing and promoting the top wineries.

“Our mission is to provide recognition for outstanding Ontario wines and to the men and women who are dedicated to producing a superior product,” explains Tony Aspler. “These awards enhance the profile of Ontario wines in the world market, opening doors to new opportunities for Ontario wineries.”

373 wine submissions from 54 wineries were judged in 25 different categories, and three from each category were awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze Medals. Judging took place in April; the judges were sequestered from the public and held a blind tasting all of the wines. OWA’s accredited wine judges come from the wine writing and teaching community, bringing their expert palates to the fore to find the best of the best.

The following is a list of all the wines recognized, or “crowned” if you will. Find yourself a bottle and honour the bold Ontarian winemakers.
