Ode to Oysters

By / Wine + Drinks / March 27th, 2014 / 4

We know that the classic pairing of oysters and well-chilled champagne rarely disappoints. But, if you’re looking to try something a little different next time you indulge, may we recommend the following wines, all well suited to the briny richness of the oyster.

Bouza Albariño 2012

$25

Canelones and Montevideo, Uruguay

Review Summary:

Bold aromatics grab your attention with ripe peach, spicy tangerine and white flowers. The lees-enriched palate delivers honey notes up-front, bright peach on the mid-palate, and a dry, clean, citrus-zest finish. The 15% French oak barrel fermentation brings out well-balanced complexity. Begs for seafood.

Pierre André Pouilly Fuissé AC 2010

Editor Rating: Very Good

$38

Review Summary:

Shows subtle green-apple scents with a trace of mineral and a hint of spice. Fine green fruit is enveloped in creamy smoothness in the mouth. Harmonious, seamless style finishing with an agreeable touch of gravelly mineral.

Astrolabe Voyage Sauvignon Blanc 2011

$24

Marlborough, New Zealand

Review Summary:

The in-your-face aromatics signal its Marlborough origins, along with characteristic gooseberry, elderflower and lemon-and-lime zestiness on both nose and palate. The medium-body weight and rich texture, balanced by lip-smacking acidity, lead to a mineral finish. Delightful with a salad course.

Josep Maria Raventós i Blanc Cava Reserva Brut

Reviewed by: Gilles Bois

Editor Rating: Very Good

$21

Review Summary:

More complexity on the nose than is usual for a Cava, with fruity notes, chalky minerality and even a touch of rancio. Very dry; clean acidity and a neat finish. Very good.
