Canada’s first female certified cicerone, Mirella Amato, recently released her first book, titled Beerology: Everything you need to know to enjoy beer…even more. Not only is it packed with easy-to-read and understand info, it also features a selection of beer cocktails, including this one – the Italiano.

ITALIANO

Inspired by the classic Campari-based Americano cocktail, this drink turns the tables, spicing up a classic American style of beer and taking it into traditional Italian cocktail territory.

  • 1/2 ounce (15 mL) ruby port
  • 1 ounce (30 mL) Campari
  • 1 ounce (30 mL) orange juice
  • dash of bitters
  • 5 ounces (150 mL) American pale ale
  • grapefruit twist for garnish

Fill a 12-ounce (355 mL) highball glass with 1/2 cup (125 mL) crushed ice. Add the port, Campari, orange juice, bitters and beer and stir gently. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.
