Why Cab Continues to be King

By / Wine + Drinks / March 5th, 2014 / 1

The King of Reds can be pretty boring. I’m talking about Cabernet Sauvignon here and I’m sure some of you are shocked by that statement, but it’s true.

Cabernet can be pedestrian, it can be bland and it can be uneventful – but when made well it can intrigue, delight and be quite sophisticated.

As a wine writer I taste a lot of wine and because Cabernet Sauvignon rules the roost of reds I taste a lot of it … the ones that captivate are the ones I want in my cellar, the ones I want to hold for years to see how they evolve and develop … I want to buy cases, I want to consume gallons and it is these wines that make you realize why Cab is King.

Sister’s Run 2011 Bethlehem Black Cabernet Sauvignon (Australia) – $16.95

Love what the sister is doing and here she’s got black currant, smoky, spicy, and coffee liqueur notes all rolled into one.

Ca’Momi 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon (California) – $21.95

This one’s a little atypical but interesting nonetheless: mocha and chocolate, with cassis and vanilla.

Carpineto Farnito Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (Italy) – $29.95

Not a country you usually think of for straight Cab; this one is rich and pretty with smoked meat and spiced blackberry.

Montgras 2011 Intriga Cabernet Sauvignon (Chile) – $21.95

Great value Cab that over delivers, even if it is over $20; full of smooth red fruit and just the right amount of pepper.
