6 Basic Cocktails You Should Know by Heart
Mai Tai
This drink’s origin story is clouded in controversy. For example, some claim it was first served at Trader Vic’s in 1944 while others argue it first appeared at Don The Beachcomber’s in 1933. This may explain why there are so many different Mai Tai recipes floating around out there. You may find that a Mai Tai you enjoy at one bar tastes nothing like the Mai Tai you enjoyed on vacation. Learning to make the Mai Tai you like will make sure you’re able to whip up this tiki-inspired cocktail to your satisfaction every time.
A recipe that will satisfy even the most hardened critic:
3/4 oz Bacardi Light rum
1/4 oz Bacardi 151 rum
1/2 oz orange curacao
1/2 oz orgeat syrup (sweet syrup made from almonds, sugar and rose or orange flower water)
Optional: 1/2 oz lime juice, 1/2 oz simple syrup
Two ways to prep:
Option 1 – Shake everything and strain into a highball glass.
Option 2 – Fill highball glass with ice and add all the ingredients. Stir. Garnish with mint, cherry and/or pineapple (optional).
